Es war nie profitabel, das luxuriöse "Grande Hotel" in Beira/Mozambique mit seinen 110 Zimmern und dem wunderschönen Swimmingpool. Schon 1960 gaben die Besitzer es auf, danach diente es u.a. als Gefängnis und schließlich als Flüchtlingslager während des Bürgerkriegs - heute wohnen dort ca. 350 Familien, 2500 Menschen ohne fließendes Wasser oder Strom, im Swimmingpool wird die Wäsche gewaschen.
Das Grande Hotel ist ein Welt für sich, eine Stadt in der Stadt - und manche Menschen verbringen dort ihr ganzes Leben...

Built in Beira, Mozambique in 1955, Grande Hotel was one of the largest hotels in the world, on an area of 12,000 sqm. This exuberant gem of the colonial regime had only 110 luxurious rooms. But in 2010 the hotel is only a shadow of that golden age, 2500 squatters inhabit the place, who stripped down the place bare to the bone. The hotel is now scheduled to be demolished to make way for a resort, to the dismay of the inhabitants.
